WordPress Post Content Type Explained

Post Content Type is the most used content type by bloggers, though the editor is nearly the same as the page content type but there are lot more options in post content type and the post content type also show the post date to the reader, as the content in the post content type is used in blog, so it must have date so that person is able to read the posts date wise.post_content_type

In the Post content type there are three things, when you go to the Posts menu item on the top of the left vertical menu, you will see following menu items that are totally linked to the posts content type and also present in the POSTs menu these are:

  1. All Posts
  2. Add New
  3. Categories
  4. Tags

If we say content in the Posts content type is the main responsible content to bring in more visitors to your website, that would not be wrong, so let me explain each above listed item,

  1. All Posts: This Option lists all the Posts that have been posted in the installation of wordpress or have been saved as draft to be published later. You can go to any of the Posts already there and click on the edit or quick edit to change the options present there here is the screenshotall_posts_wordpress_screenshotnow if you go to the edit option it will show the post editor, like the following with the exiting content post_edit_window_wordpressand if you click on quick edit it will show like the following quick_edit_posts_wordpress You can see many options here like title, slug, date of publishing, categories and password, let me explain one by one, THE TITLE: the title is that one that will appear in top of the post, or you can say the title is the headline of the Post article that you are about to write, also the title would be the one that most search engine will think that this post is all about so, choose the title right, SLUG: Is is the Part of the Url or the address that appears in the address bar that you can change or keep it same as the title, because this will also have an impact on targeting this particular keyword as the title, DATE OF PUBLISHING: is the date you have published this post, even if you edit this article the date of publishing will remain same, CATEGORIES: Categories are the ones in which you can categorise all your articles, then there are options to disable/enable Allow Comments  disable/enable Allow Pings, which makes it very important to explain what are comments, comments is the capability allowed in wordpress for any reader to give a note or you can say that it allows the reader to communicate with author of the article that he is viewing without he being having a user id or password, he just will fill in the name, email, website and the comment that he wants to write about that article, once the comment is written the article author gets a notification by email and then he can enable or disable the comment and then the comments shows under that particular article, the author of the article also has the right to reply to this comment.
  2. Add New: By clicking on this option the editor is opened similar to the one that opens when you edit a post, the only difference is that it allows you to create a post from start and then pickup up a category in which you will be posting in, All from scratch, here is a screenshot of how it will look when you click on add newadd_new_post_wordpressNow there are new options here as well it is allowing to pickup a format in which you want to publish the post like standard, aside, image, video etc, now these options always depend upon the theme, if the theme has different type of formats for posts to be posted. you will also see in the editor there is an option to save draft, this is similar to save draft in case of email where you can actually write the post insert images into it, use the formating editor to format tax add bold/italic add headlines add paragraphs and also put in links and then if the article is not complete you can save it as a draft and it will appear in the all posts and you can click on the edit option and start editing from the point you left it in the editor, right next to the save draft option there is preview option which provides the preview of the posts, incase you don’t want to publish an article and just want to see before how this article will look you can use the preview option and another tab will open where you can see how the article will look like once it is published. When publishing the article you can also select multiple categories to publish the article into or create a new category if its not present. You should also target multiple keywords, by putting in comma separated format in the tag field. If you want to see how to use the post editor formatting options look at the following article where we covered when we did the page content type article. Also have a look at the right sidebar there are more options like select the category in which you want to post and specify the tags which should be targetted in the search engine for the post here is a screenshot.add_post_sidebar
  3. Categories: Categories are the way by which we can list common type of posts together, so if some reader wants to read similar type of posts he can just click that particular category and the posts categorized under that particular category will be listed. Category can also be used to target some keywords in the search engine as each category has its own category archive page. Here is the screenshot of category page.category_edit_pageon this page for categories you can add as many categorizes as you want, the possibility to add slug for each category is also there so that it is easy to target a particular keyword, when you have the same word in the url, you can give a parent category to a category so that posts under child category also show under  parent category archive page. There is also option to add a description for the category, as some themes show the description the archive page, to make it more search engine appealing. As you can see there are some categories listed but there is also one category that is written as uncategorized: now this is a default category present in the wordpress category system, you can rename this category but cannot delete it, one more thing i have noticed is when we are posting a post, this category is by default selected so that if you forget to select a category this get selected automatically. So you can rename it appropriately according to your blog . now if the category has been used too less you can convert it into tag using the category to tag convertor link below the category list.
  4. Tags:  Tags are the best to target particular keywords on the search engine, when you create a post or edit a post you can add as many keywords for that post is all about separated by comma as shown in the following screenshot, tags_in_categoryclick on add and these tags will become part of this post, every tag has a tag archive page, so when two posts have a common tag for example demo tag, then both the posts will show in the tag archive page of demo tag.  Now lets come to the tag page that we were discussing earlier, the tag page lists all the tags that are part of any post so the tag page looks like thistag_page_in_wordpressAs you can see there is a list of tags that are there and it also lists the description of each tag and as well as how many posts the tag is used in as count, nw if a particular tag is used too often you can convert that to a category so that users are able to browse through it from the category menu, this can be done using the tag to category convertor link below the list of the tags. Now this page also gives you the option to create tags with the similar fields as were present on the category page, like, name, slug description, now everything has similar importance as was in the case of category page.
