How to reset wordpress password

The Easiest way to reset your wordpress password in case you have forgotten it is by using the forgot password link, but if you have forgotton the admin id as well as the email id then what will you doreset_wordpress_password

Lets first do the most easy way to reset your wordpress password, open the wordpress login screen,

which will open by typing in wp-admin after complete path of wordpress installation directory, which also includes your domain name which could be anything as simple as, yourdomain.com/wp-admin or could be something like yourdomain.com/instaldir/wp-admin  if it is the right address you have opened you will see the above page to login. Now click on the Lost your password link at the bottom of the login page and you will see the following screenchange_wordpress_passwordNow you must know the email id, that you typed in when you installed wordpress because, the reset password link is going to be sent to that email id. If you don’t remember the email id and just remember the username, just type in the username and then check every email id that you have to see if you have received an email from your wordpress installation to reset your password. One very important thing is that this email usually lands up in your spam box. so its a must to check the spam box, so when you type in the right email id / username and click on Get new Password, it will show you the following message.

change_wordpress_password_1

The email that you will get will look like this reset_wordpress_password_1You can see in my case it landed in the spam folder the from address says wordpress@yourdomain.com and subject says [title of website] password Reset, now you can click on the below link and you will see the following screenwordpress_forgot_passwordNow in the above screen you see that it has itself created a random password you can either keep this password and click on reset password or you can clear this password and type in your password, while keeping a password do keep in mind:

  1. Longer the password the better, minimum 12 characters i would recommend
  2. It should have atleast one uppercase letter
  3. One lowercase letter
  4. One symbol
  5. One Number

and when you will type in the password it will show if you have set a strong password or a week one and when you have set a string password click in reset password and you will see the following screenlost_wordpress_passwordnow this means your password is successfully set and you can now login by going to the login screen. Now Comes the Second scenario where you have checked all the emails and their spam folders and you haven’t received any reset password link. In this case having the details of your web hosting control panel will help you. It Doesn’t require much technical knowledge believe me.

So now to reset the password using website hosting control panel, login into your control panel and look for phpmyadmin, the icon for phpmyadmin will look like thislost_wordpress_password_1When you will click on it you will be taken to another page that will look like the following, on this page look at the left hand side and click on the database in which you have installed wordpress. in my case the db name is demowpsc_wpchange_wordpress_password_2

After You click on the database you will see the following screenchange_wordpress_pasword_3In the above screen click on the database table that says wp_users as this table contains the authentication info and then you will be able to see the following screen which shows the content of the wp_users table as seen in the following screen.easily_change_wordpress_passwordAs you can see in this table there is only one user by the name of myname and user_pass is an encrypted text, click on the edit option and you will see the following edit screensimply_change_wordpress_passwordNow the Question arises how can we convert the password that we want to keep into encrypted text so that we can place it here then save and then it starts to work. for that click on the dropdown in the function column next to the encrypted password as in the following screen

easily_reset_wordpress_passwordand select the option thats says MD5 and now you can put in whatever password you want to keep in the value field corresponding to user_pass replacing the old encrypted text with your password as in the following screen, though the password i have set in the following screen is very simple just for demo, you should keep in mind the password rules as mentioned above while keeping the password.simply_reset_wordpress_passwordand now click on the go option to save the password and you will see the following screenwordpress_password_resetNow the above screen shows the success message which says 1 row effected and it also shows the password that we set in encrypted form, which was done by selecting MD5 from the dropdown, now you can login into your wordpress by using the password that you set.
