Control Comments Spam on wordpress

I have found during my experience as wordpress webmaster, that we do get lot of spam as comments, the main issue here is that lot of spam gets piled up as comments for us to review so that we can approve or disapprove it or reply to it and most of the spam that gets submitted on our website is submitted through automatic software not real people coming to your website to leave a comment

So in this Post i will cover the most basic way to stop software from submitting comment spam autpmatically, so now after implementing our solution the user that wants to submit a comment to your website has to actually visit your website to submit a comment, which means that even if somebody puts in an irrelevant comment not complying with your comments policy he/she has to come and visit your post. I have found that using this approach the comment spam is reduced by 90% atleast. So the way out is to implement a captcha plugin, so a user has to submit a mandatory captcha verification to submit a comment. Now to implement the plugin go to plugins on the left hand side vertical menu and click on add newanti_spam_wordpressNow in the search field type in captcha, and you will see the followingwordpress_anti_spam

i recommend the plugin Captcha by bestwebsoft, which hinders spam by using the math logic forms, the person will filling the form has to answer simple question based upon maths like addition, subtraction multiplication in order to verify that he is human 😉 . so click on install now on captcha by bestwebsoft  and you will see the following screenwordpress_spam_filterNow click on activate plugin link and the plugin will be activated and you will be diverted to the list of the installed plugins, like the following screen wordpress_spam_blockernow as you can see there is a small horizontal bar over this screen that is asking you to configure the plugin that we have just installed click on the link that says Settings and you will see the following screen, i have taken two screen shot, 1) 1st part of the settings screen 2) 2nd part of the settings screen.wordpress_spam_protectionwordpress_spam_plugin

As you can see the first part of screen have settings like enable captcha for login form, registration form, reset password form comments form, i haven’t changed any settings here these are the default settings let them be as it is and in the second screen its giving you the option of which arithmetic actions you want to use, you can configure that according to your choice, then there is complexity, you can also enable disable it according to your choice, you can take your mouse pointer over the blue question mark and you will be able to see what each option means, after putting in the right settings click on, save changes and you have configured it. let me show you screen shot of the comment form before and after, the first screen shot is before installing the pluginwordpress_stop_spam_commentsSecond one is after the captcha plugin is installed, i have highlighted the captcha part in this formcaptcha_for_comments

Now as you can see user has to complete the maths equation in order to submit this form so softwares will not be able to automatically submit comment forms hence reducing spam. This plugin also protects the login form of wordpress from brute force attacks by implementing captcha there and also protects the registration forms from software signups, in other words it helps and enables the wordpress admin to be protected from all kind of automatic form submission software, which can cause lot of damage, from brute force attack on login form, auto signups and wordpress comments spam.
